About the Workshop

Q1. What do you mean by a “Modified Game Boy”?
——— “Modified” refers to the process of recycling an original Game Boy motherboard and combining it with completely new parts — including the screen, buttons, speaker, and more. The internal software and gameplay remain exactly the same as the original. What changes is the build quality, visual design, and overall experience, giving new life to a classic console.
The biggest difference from the original model is the upgraded screen, which now includes a backlight and an RGB color function that adds subtle color tones to the grayscale display. It doesn’t make the console fully colorized like the Game Boy Color, but it enhances the visuals beautifully with adjustable tints. For more details please refer to our gallery.

Q2. What do you do during the workshop?
——— During the workshop, we open up an original Game Boy, recycle its motherboard, and rebuild it using brand-new components. You’ll learn how the Game Boy works inside and out while assembling your own custom console.
The session also includes a short presentation about the history of the Game Boy, its cultural impact, and its rival consoles of the time.
We aim to create a fun and intimate atmosphere where travelers can share the experience with others and our staff. Feel free to ask us for tourist tips such as great food spots, vintage game shops, and second-hand stores nearby!

Q3. Are you related to Nintendo?
——— No, we are not affiliated with Nintendo in any way. We are an independent small workshop that loves retro gaming and is dedicated to preserving its legacy by giving classic consoles new life through modification and creative rebuilding.

Q4. Do you sell other products on-site?
——— Yes! We have a large collection of retro Game Boy cartridges and accessories available for purchase. Please note that payment for these items is cash only.

Q5. How long does the workshop last?
——— The workshop usually lasts about 2 hours, but the exact duration may vary depending on your pace.

Q6. What is the difficulty level of the workshop?
——— The difficulty is easy to medium. The only skills required are basic screwing, and everything else will be explained step by step. No soldering or welding is involved.

Q7. Is the workshop suitable for kids?
——— Yes! The recommended age is 10 and up, but younger children can also join with adult support. Please note that a child must be accompanied by an adult family member throughout the entire workshop.

Q8. Can I modify other consoles like the Game Boy Pocket, Color, or Advance?
——— This workshop is only for the first Game Boy model. We currently don’t offer workshops or modification services for other versions.

Q9. I saw a shell design in your photo gallery — can I get the exact same one without asking about availability?
——— The stock of shells, buttons, and screen frames is limited and changes frequently. If you want a specific design, please contact us in advance so we can prepare it for you before you make your reservation. We can’t guarantee availability otherwise.

Q10. Do I need to bring anything?
——— Nothing at all! Just come as you are — we’ll provide all the necessary tools and equipment.

Q11. Can I buy a finished modified Game Boy without joining the workshop?
——— Yes, you can purchase a finished console without attending the workshop. However, you’ll need to visit our workshop space to choose your preferred design in person. The price is the same as the regular workshop fee. Please contact us through Instagram DM in this case.

Orders & Payment

Q1. Can I bring my own Game Boy for modification?
——— Yes! You can bring your own original Game Boy for modification. If your motherboard is working, you’ll receive a ¥3,000 discount on the workshop fee.

Q2. What happens if my modified Game Boy has an issue?
——— Please contact us by Instagram DM with details and photos. We will check whether your Game Boy is defective and, if not, guide you on how to make it work properly.
If your console is confirmed to be defective, we will repair it. Please understand that the Game Boy is a retro console with a recycled motherboard, so its stability and lifespan cannot be compared to a completely new device.

Q3. How long will the console last?
——— Longevity depends on individual use and the condition of the motherboard. Since the Game Boy uses a recycled motherboard, it cannot be compared to a new console in terms of durability or stability. Each motherboard is carefully tested, but that does not guarantee it will perform like new.

Q4. When will I receive my modified Game Boy?
——— Since this is a hands-on workshop, you’ll modify it yourself and take it home with you the same day.

Q5. Do you replace game cartridge batteries?
——— Yes, we offer battery replacement for certain cartridges purchased at our workshop and for external games brought by workshop participants. The fee is ¥1,000 per cartridge for external games and free for games bought at the workshop. This service is available only to participants and not for external drop-offs.

——— We currently do not provide a waiting list. All bookings are made on a first-come, first-served system, and only dates that appear as available on our website can be reserved. Please check the reservation section on our homepage to see the latest availability.

Q4. What time should I arrive?

——— You can come 5-10 mins before the starting time so you can get settled in comfortably.

Q5. What happens if I’m late for my reservation?
——— Since the workshop is often held with multiple participants, we can only wait up to 5 minutes after the scheduled start time before beginning.
If other participants have already arrived, we’ll start the workshop as planned — please note that we cannot restart or repeat the introduction for late arrivals.
If you know in advance that you’ll be late, please contact us with your name or order number. Depending on how long it will take for you to arrive, we may be able to adjust the start slightly before beginning.
